First House: Living Room Tour

May 3, 2014 - No Comments - 2 min read

In the process of waiting to move ahead in our house-selling venture, I thought I would take the time to show off our existing house. I don’t have many ‘before’ photos and the ones I do have are on an older poor quality camera. So we’ll just stick with how the room is now, for me to remember when we leave…

So the whole downstairs is open plan – but I’ll save the kitchen for another post. Here’s our hideous fireplace:

Yep, I actually hate this fireplace, but so many people told me they liked it and considering it’s in good condition, we figured it would be a waste of money and time to rip it all out and replace.

Also being gas connected, this wasn’t something we could do ourselves either. So I stuck with it and just gave it a new fresh white colour paint. (it was a grotty browny/beige before) I don’t mind it so much now, but I still don’t love it. Definitely something I won’t miss about this living room!

DIY alcove shelves

This cupboard stores the gas/electric meters and also the fuse box too, so there’s not much room for anything else, although I have managed to squish in some paints in there!

The doors were already there when we moved in, but they were unpainted pine with broken hinges, and there were no handles. We’ve fixed all that, painted it up and also added magnets to the doors so they stay shut when you close them.

Again, I don’t love the doors, but I think with new door-ware and some paint it’s made it much better. We also made the shelves above, which is just wood cut to size and painted.

The TV stand is quite unique as it’s made from old railway sleepers. Each sleeper is literally just placed into position and there’s nothing holding any of it together. You can’t lean on it unless you want to lose your TV, and you also can’t easily move it around the room without taking each individual bit off. BUT, it came at a bargain price and was handmade by a seller on eBay and I love the look of it, none-the-less.

I have absolutely zero love for this sofa, which was secondhand from someone we knew, but it serves its purpose. I do, however, love the throw and cushions – all from TK Maxx – my fave dream shop!

The coat hooks and chest are from eBay – FYI, I fricken love eBay. I can’t wait to begin bargain-hunting on there again when we finally move! A new sofa is definitely on the list and maybe a coffee table too, who knows.

I really like our living room, I only wish it got more sunlight as I find myself with the lights on pretty much all day long. Not so good for our electric bill… Oops. But there we have it, a tour of our small but perfectly formed living room!
