Yep, today I dug myself a grave. Or perhaps it should be for Grant… Either way, here it is…
OK so it’s not a grave and if it was a grave I’d still have a looong way to go with the digging. But admittedly passer-by, this does look a bit dodgy. Originally, this patch was a rock-bed which was separated by the concrete border which was firmly grounded into the soil.
That is now gone.
There was no way that concrete border was coming out any other way, other than digging down beneath it. I could also then establish that there was no concrete bottom to this rock-bed, but there were however a bazillion bricks! And I couldn’t resist but keep digging to see what the hell they were for and how deep they went.
Well, I’m still not sure. 5 hours of back-lifting spade-work and I declared I’d had enough for today. I think I’ve certainly burnt off all those extra ice lollies! Who needs the gym when you’ve got holes to dig? Ha. But so far I have uncovered three layers of brick. The only conclusions I’ve come to on the hidden brick-wall front is that perhaps they are the foundations of an old out-building? Or perhaps they were once used as a border in the garden? Either conclusion only leaves me thinking.. why would they remove the rest but not these? Hmm. Intrigued!
Unfortunately for these long-lasting hidden bricks, they need to be removed for my beautiful grass to grow un-patchy and also for it to get the most nutrients from the soil. But I’m determined to put them to use in another way as long as I can remove them in one piece.
I should also mention, that concrete-bottomed section I mentioned on the left of the rock-bed in my last post was actually just planks of concrete laid on the soil. Hurrah! They’re gone now too. So after today (day 5) on the jungle clean-up mission, it’s definitely looking more like a jungle-destruction mission. But we’re getting there.
