Today we decided to take an Autumn trip out with the dogs to Sherwood Forest. We went here a couple of years ago in the summer when we just had the one dog, but oh my gosh, visiting in the Autumn is even more beautiful! I love it when the all the leaves begin turning brown and start falling from the trees. And incredibly this Autumn, it’s ridiculously warm! Like, summer warm. We’re getting all the Autumn beautiful-ness mixed in with the gorgeous summer sun, thank you very much England, I like that a lot.
Sherwood Forest is situated in Nottinghamshire, only about a 25 minute drive from our house actually, which is crazy that we haven’t visited it more! It’s most famously known for being the home to Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The forest itself is humongous, but of course it would be impossible to walk through all of it, but there are various sized walks to choose from, and some larger cycle routes too. The ‘Major Oak’ walk is probably the most popular, which is only a 15 minute stroll to an old Oak tree, named the ‘Major Oak’ which is estimated to be 1,150 years old! That tree’s seen it all.
We walked this, and chose one of the larger walks which lasted about 2 hours. There’s so much to see, so many squirrels, so many trees! It’s the perfect place to a quiet relaxed dog walk, ours loved it! Here’s some pics from the day..
At the end of your stroll there’s a shop which sells bows and arrows and mini Robin Hood costumes – I can’t tell you how many little Merry Men I saw around the Forest, lots. There’s also a cafe where we re-fuelled with some coffee and cookies. Nom. Parking is free during week-days and only £3 at weekends, there’s no entrance fee either, so it’s a brilliant free day out for all the family.. Next year we might even try out the cycle-routes! But we’ll be back for sure.
